RESEARCH & TEACHING

Research

I'm a public and nonprofit management scholar and enthusiast.  At the broadest level, I'm dedicated to research and teaching involved in improving our public and nonprofit institutions that help humankind flourish.  I've coauthored several edited books (Amazon links to the right) and over six dozen articles and chapters. See my CV (pdf) or publications page (quick links) for a full list aimed at different dimensions of this broader endeavor.  My research has been covered in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.

More particularly, I'm interested in public servants.  What makes them choose government and nonprofit careers of sacrifice and service?  Why do they behave benevolently at and through work? What causes them to behave contrary to these more benevolent inclinations?  I list several related research questions below.  If these spark an interest, please feel free to reach out.  rc@byu.edu

I direct the Public Service Lab where I involve many of our great graduate students in mentored research projects.

Teaching

I teach in BYU's NASPAA accredited Master of Public Administration (MPA) program.  Our faculty and students are some of the best I've ever known.

I teach classes about how an MPA is different (and better) than an MBA, about intergovernmental relations, about local government, about public law. I also teach a pre-PhD course for our MPA students interested in scholarly/research careers.
